Welcome To Kidlits!

What exactly are Kidlits? That’s certainly a good question. Maybe we should start with a definition.

A Quick Definition

kidlits (kĭd-lĭts) n. 1. exceptional works of fiction and poetry derived from the imagination of fourth, fifth and sixth grade writers. 2. a webzine devoted to publishing those works.

Who We Are & What We Do

Kidlits was founded in May, 2009 by the Society for the Advancement of Young Writers. The Society’s chairperson saw a need for a publication that focused on the work of some of the most creative writers out there, you, the fourth, fifth and sixth graders. Published quarterly Kidlits’ goal is to publish hundreds of your stories and poems over the course of the year.

Kidlits’ fiction and poetry editors are your peers. Who better to read your work than other kids your own age? Speaking of your work...

A Call for Submissions

To the left you will see a set of links. If you surf on over to the submission guidelines link, you will find all the information needed to send your story to Kidlits for possible publication. You’ll find important information such as our first deadline of August 15, 2009. Not everyone will get published, but hundreds will and every story will be read by one of our editors.

What Else Is Inside Kidlit’s?

Kidlits isn’t just about your works. There will be interviews with some of the writers that you read. We’ll ask questions that will reveal the way they came up with the ideas that led them to write what they did. (This is called the writing process. All writers have one.) If there is enough advance notice, we may be able to take questions from Kidlits readers and writers and ask them of our guests.

Parents and Teachers Welcome!

Teachers and Parents, you can be a part of Kidlits. If you look under the Resource center links you will find activities, information and exercises to help you educate and encourage your young writers. It is hoped that in the future a either a supplemental curriculum or a template for an after school program will be available for home school teachers and elementary and middle school classrooms. If you want to incorporate Kidlits into your lesson plans, the resource center can help.

Launch Date Confirmed!

The first issue of Kidlits will go live on September 15, 2009. We are incredibly excited for the first chance to publish your works. We hope Kidlits will be a energy filled home for your creativity and imaginations. You’ll get a chance to see what other kids your age are writing and get a chance to potentially see your work in print. As we say here at Kidlits, “Get ready. Get set. Write!”

Sincerely,

Mr. F., Managing Editor
Chairperson, Society for the Advancement of Young Writers

Meet Our Staff

Mr. F. is our managing editor. Although he’s way older than a fourth, fifth or sixth grader, we let him stay around because he’a also a professionally published writer with B.A. and M.F.A degrees in Creative Writing. Mr. F. started the Society for the Advancement of Young Writers which publishes Kidlits Webzine. He approves the stories and poems selected by the creative content editors.

You’ll sometimes see his pet, Raven the Cat, prowling in the fiction and poetry pages. Raven loves nothing more than to gobble up stories that were submitted with no errors. Stories like that will receive his Purrfect Badge.
Keegz is our guru of short fiction. He spends most of his time going through your story submissions when he’s not studying for his fifth grade Social Studies test. Jefferson City is the capital of Missouri. More than just a fan of fiction, Keegz is a writer of fantasy as well. He’ll show up from time to time on the fiction pages with advice and tips.

Watch out for his pet “Scorch,” though. He’s a lover of stories and can’t control his enthusiasm. He might just burn a good story or two with his special scorchin’ badge of  excellence.

No one really knows how Pickles got his name. Some say Mr. F. started it. What we do know is that Pickles is the poetry editor for Kidlitszine.com. He loves limericks and haikus and rhyming and freestyle. He loves reading your works when he’s not heading up his fourth grade reading group. You’ll find him hanging around the Poetry pages with tips and advice.

His faithful companion “Rocky” loves poetry too. He thinks poetry is like rap music without the music. A poetry guard dog is his duty and if your poem makes him wag his tail, you’ll get his Rockin’ badge of approval.

There’s your staff for the 2009-2010 school year. Let’s make it a good one!
